Outboard crossovers for 3 way speaker - closer to amp or speaker?

As long as you're using the same gauge wire before and after the crossover, then closer to the amp is better, but only because you're using triple thickness wire for most of the run. Even then you're talking about hundreths of ohms (assuming you're using at least 14ga wire to begin with). My advice would be to use the thickest gauge you want to spring for and put the crossover as close to the speaker as possible, just to minimize the wire mess.

You will certainly use less wire close to the speaker. Those who favor bi or tri-wiring, the running of individual wires to each driver, may come up with a justification for the longer run being individual to the driver. Maybe a bi-wiring thread could stir up some opinions. I for one agree with DiscoJones. Use a heavy enough gauge and minimize the mess. If you are married, you may get a very strong vote for close to the speaker with minimum spaghetti.
