I have a living room that looks like this:

But we've recently removed the large "fishing rod" lamp which is to be replaced by some kind of ceiling lamp. I'm now contemplating whether I could make some kind of combined lamp/acoustic treatment.

There seems to be some dispute whether it is better to use diffusion or absorption for the first ceiling reflex. My first thought was to make a skyline type diffuser and set a LED strip behind, something like this:

Both my wife and I like the looks of them, I just need to find someone to borrow a table saw from. To get more light down (and not only along the ceiling) I'm considering putting a few extra lamps in some of the long rods.

Another idea (which is more towards absorption) is to hang one of these:

about 10 cm (4") from the ceiling, add a 5 cm (2") basotect panel (link) on the backside and of course some lightning (LED-strips).

How large does the lamp need to be to give a substanial effect? Is 120 x 60 cm (48 x 24") enough?

Is a BAD-panel a good alternative here? How would I make that "pretty"?

Ahh diffusion confusion. I would think a mix of larger and smaller curved objects would add to the decor.

Things to consider are flower vases both large and small with various areangements of real and artificial flowers. Acoustic panels. 200-300mm diameter cardboard tubes cut in half and covered with wallpaper, fabric of if your photographically inclined shoot various pictures of natural or artificial patterns and have wallmart blow them up to 600-1000mm size and cut to fit the cylinder half for unique diffusors. Other curved wall hangings. Conces with flowers.
