I have been working on a SL / JohnK style ob speaker using vintage Seas alnico drivers.
For the lower mid I was using the 21TV-GW (TG's blackcones) which is a wonderful speaker but unfortunately it can not handle the EQ needed to play flat down to 200Hz.
So I decided to try a modern driver.
But instead of playing it safe and ordering SL's or JohnK's driver, I impulsively ordered the 18 Sound 8MB400.
8MB400 is quite similar to the Seas and ScanS that SL and JohnK use,
except that it has a much higher Fs of 64Hz.
Plan is to use it on a narrow open baffle (30-35cm wide) from 125 to 1000Hz.
Can this work?
Here are the specs:

8MB400s arrived in the weekend and I was able to give them a go.
They bottom out right away at EQ levels needed for narrow open baffle.
It looks like an Fs of under 30Hz is needed for the lower mid driver in this setting.
But I am not liking the idea of so much cone movement in the human voice region (to compensate for the ob cancellation).
I came to the conclusion that cone drivers are not ideal for OB.
Electrostats and B&G drivers are best for OB.
B&Gs have very high Qts, so cancellation is less of a problem.
Neo10 can go down to 200-250Hz, and radia 75 down to 150Hz baffleless.
But those are rather expensive and I would ideally like to crossover around 100-125Hz.
So the OB dream is over for me, I feel (for under 1000Hz at least).
I still have the Neo8s and I will try to keep them OB for over 1000Hz.
Next plan for the 100-1000Hz region is a small sealed box.
So it will be an omni to OB transition (avoiding baffle step).
I am thinking of replacing 8MB400 with 10NMB500.

Which one would be the better driver for 100-1000Hz in a sealed box of about 30Lt.

10NMB500 - LF Neodymium Driver

8MB400 - MB Ferrite Driver
