Default Speedster

I just finished a 9.2 liter version of the Speedster. I re-purposed an old cabinet from an abandoned project. I wanted to use the cabinets as the veneering came out really nice. Veneer is raw anigre over an MDF followed with Watco natural Danish Oil and Minwax paste wax on top.

I had to make new baffles so I picked up 2 IKEA APTITLIG bamboo cutting boards $7.99 each. Dimensions are 11" x 17.75" x 5/8" - the website says it's 3/4" but it is not. These are nice because the end grain is vertical not horizontal and they are dead flat, no bowing like some boards with horizontal/flat end grain.

I tuned this to around 55Hz with a 1.5" x 3.65" port. Light stuffing. I'm really happy how they turned out and how they sound. Bass is really nice and not overpowering. The Fountek is great with nice detail and no harshness at all. Paul hit a home-run with these.

I've been enamored with the Altec speakers of old since I was a kid, and worked for several of the last years gathering A-7 components for some type of build. Because of limited space, I needed corner cabinets, and ended up building a couple of striped-mahogany veneered 6.5 cubic foot bass reflex cabs with matching horn cabinets up top.

The components are Altec 511B horns, Altec 802D drivers, Altec 416-8Z woofers, and Beyma CP21F slot super tweeters. The crossover is a two-way second order (12dB/octave) at 800Hz, with the super tweeter rolled in at the 802D rolloff point - 10kHz. A passive CD eq network was incorporated in the horn leg of the crossover.

The speakers are driven by a rebuilt Dynaco PAT4 preamp and two Dynakit Mark IV tube monoblocks.

This is the most gratifying and best-sounding speaker system that I've ever owned, and I'm left smiling every time I crank them up. These are rich.

Sparrowlegs,

Interesting looking build you got there!

Nice work with the omni-tweeter - how do they measure and how is the top end to your ears?
