Glad I asked I totally missed that, thank you!

Really excited as my C173-6-090 pair arrive tomorrow :)

Glad you found it :)
The inside of my cabinet has the following characteristics:
- cabinet dimensions according to golden ratio and positioning the driver cutout not in the middle of everything (even 1-2mm horizontal offset). Boxnotes is very helpful.
- backside is irregular to avoid reflections
- damping : 1cm felt glued to the walls and the inside filled with Twaron angel hair: very good damping material, recommended!
- Aperiodic vent, just sounds better than sealed for this mid.

Thank you! I am having trouble finding aperiodic membranes. Where did you find yours? Seems they were more commonly for sale 5-10 years ago.

Edit: Found it! And didn't Dynaudio used to make the Variovent?

The source is a DAC END in voltage out with LL1684 (bal->SE) as output stage.
The amplifier is a F5 (Fairchild mosfets, CLC PS, sikorel caps) sounds very good but misses some bass authority, soon to be replaced with a First One amplifier.

Thanx Danny.
Sabre 9018 is apreciated for diyeurs.
Great job for this full diy installation.

Do you have any comparaisons with commercial dac?

Any progress with your larger cabinet design?
I still did not started my project, I have no access to 4x8Foot Baltic birch or other decent material for the enclosure. I will take some idea from your design. I hope you still happy with your speakers.
Very likely I use bi-amplifying ones to keep the 8ohm impedance. How I said I will use one Alcone woofer from 65L BR (datasheet advise) tuned to F3 31Hz and for the HI-VI I use 60L BR also tuned to the same fervency. On the HI VI I will use a separate amplifier if I can set up the system from one control. All I need a sheet of 4x8 foot Baltic birch. Several distributors sell pieces like 2x4 foot, I would need 7PC of those and half would be a waste because small size material.

Please report us back until these time you put some time into your speakers (fully broken in)
Thank for sharing you excellent project, it is very inspiring.

Hi Gaborbela,

The bigger cabinet is planned for later, I have all the panels cut but still need to assemble them, maybe later this summer.
But I'm not in a hurry because it sounds also very good with the current cabinets :)

These speakers are still my reference, probably speakers for life if there's no major breakthrough in speaker transducer technology.
When friends drop by for a listening it's still also their reference :)

Good idea to use separate amplifiers for the woofers, it will give you more options to get good bass adapted to the room and hunt for the dragons in the 50-200Hz area ;)

I'm planning a small update to the crossover:
- an LCR impedance correction to smash down the 55Hz impedance peak of the woofers
- change woofers 2.8mh to 3.1mh and remove the 1.1mH: gives some more energy in the 100-200hz area
- change mid 94uf to 84uf and 6.8mH to 5.6mH to relieve the mid a little more from 50-150hz.
But I still need to test and measure this.

If I would make a new speaker now, I just would make the same.
It sounds very revealing, holographic, goes down to 30hz, a high sensitivity of 93dB that gives access to plenty of amplifiers and didn't cost me 20000€ :)

Regards,
Danny

Hi All,

I really want to build my own speakers as Danny 66 but i have not skill, tools and time .... to do this project. Maybe i will do in the future and now i need a pair of speakers to listen to My ref amp firstly.
Please advice me some speaker models which are suitable for My ref amp. Bookshelf speaker/8ohm is my first choice!

Thank you

Refspeaker v2

Five years later and it was time for an update of my RefSpeaker.

The new crossover is finally done, it took a lot of measurements and listening.
The FR is rather flat from 200Hz to 20kHz, below 200Hz it climbs to +3db more output, the bass goes to a low 23Hz.

I'll make a new thread but here are already some pics.

Regards,
Danny

Version 2 is as good as finished, I just need to put the final mid/high crossover in the cabinet.
Bass cabinets and its crossover are already done.

Mid/high sounds good and measures good, finally :)
Phase between mid and high is good, on the picture I measured in room at 1.10m distance and height between mid and ribbon,
it shows four measurements: mid, high, mid+high, mid+high reversed polarity

At the end of the fine tuning I was playing with 0.5dbs more or less to get the voicing correct while playing test songs (100+).
It's amazing and disturbing how sometimes 0.5db at a certain freq range can make a difference.
