Hi All

Got a hankering to build a 3 way using 2 x Dayton 8 inch woofers.

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/show...6&St3=-55841854&DS_ID=3&Product_ID=7770&DID=7

Now, not only are these things cheap at $18 (and I'll need 4 of them) but they seem to have pretty good specs. FS of 29hz and Xmax of 4.5mm. They'll handle 60w each so by the time I pair them up they'll handle all the power I need.

I know the 6.5 inch Dayton woofer is well regarded and several kits are listed on the PartsExpress site.

WINIsd gives a default tuning freq of 30hz and a box size of 94 litre (!).

Has anyone used the 8 inch Daytons or can anyone see a drawback in choosing them? I'll be crossing them in the 300hz region.

Further, I was considering the Dayton 1 1/8" silk dome tweeter:

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/show...6&St3=-55841854&DS_ID=3&Product_ID=7350&DID=7

This seems to be a very highly regarded tweeter and has a nice low FS of 907hz. But then I saw a kit on PartsExpress that used the Audax 1" textile dome:

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/show...6&St3=-55841854&DS_ID=3&Product_ID=7364&DID=7

and it was well regarded for it's off axis response. It's higher crossover point won't be an issue as it's a 3 way project. Anyone got any thoughts on these 2 tweeters?

Which brings me to the midrange. My initial searching lead me to consider a Vifa mid, perhaps:

This driver seems to have an ideal response for my purposes from 300hz to 3000hz with good extension/rolloff outside that. It's resonably priced as well.

Any suggestions or comments regarding this driver? Also, Dayton have a 5 1/4"

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/show...St3=-55841854&DS_ID=3&Product_ID=120518&DID=7

which also seems rock solid from 300hz to 3000hz. Although that peak at 3500hz would have to be dealt with.

I'm thinking second order LR crossovers all the way with a zobel on the woofers (and on the mid?).

I'd appreciate ANY feedback from the users of these drivers or on any aspect of my plans.

Thanks.

Well, I'm almost afraid to say this because of flame-potential, but I actually recommend you stay away from PE altogether because of your location. The low prices on their house brand stuff look appealing, but I got killed twice on S&H charges (and this is just next door to Canada), so that the in-your-hands cost is not that great compared to what you can get locally or within the same country, or even from some other US distributor like Madisound.

Well the shipping cost for the drivers is around US$90.

Granted it's not exactly cheap but in NZ, for some infuriatingly strange reason, there are practically no suppliers of drivers. The only supplier that offers any range carries a lot of Dayton type drivers which a)don't appear to have specs as good and b)are just as expensive even with the exchange rate factors.

And Australia, which is a lot closer then the US, doesn't seem to have many suppliers either. Any Aussies wanna educate me about suppliers over there?

As far as PE goes, well, their site seems to be very informative and well laid out. By all accounts their customer support is top notch. Are you suggesting (from experience) that Madisound would give me better bang for my buck?

Just a few driver suggestions.

I would look at a different tweeter. For a similar price, go with the TangBand 25-669. It is a much better tweeter in my opinion. Or look at the NorthCreek Tweeter that they just came out with, it is somthing like $32 USD per pair.

The dayton 8" woofers will give you good bang for the buck. As far as a Mid, why not a dome?

Thanks for the tip on Madisound's sale items:

Didn't see any 8" Audax units though.

The Peerless 831858 DVC looks like a classy unit. Are DVCs harder to work with? How should it be wired, parallel or serial, etc. I just want to wire them like 2 regualr 8 ohm drivers in parallel to give me a 4 ohm load.

Also, the Vifa P22WP looks good as well. I'd need to wire them in serial to get an 8ohm load as in parallel I'll get 2ohms. So how would that affect their efficiency rating? They're rated at just over 90db so two in series would stay the same or reduce by 3db?

Thanks.
