Compression driver /horn < 1000hz - ?cheap 1.4"?

I'm hoping to find a compression driver and horn to match to a 15" woofer (TD15M), so crossover <=1000hz. It needs to sound excellent in my home at low levels, and be able to cop it in PA use.


I can get the 18Sound waveguides cheaply, so they are a good option.

Does anyone know of a cheap 1.4" driver to match with an XT1464?

Has anyone used the 18Sound ND1424BT? This has the advantage of being designed for that waveguide.


Another option might be the Radian 745PB
+ Flat freq response on manufacturer's graph.
- No idea about mating with XT1464.
- No reviews to be found.

Unfortunately, price is a factor, so I can't afford the 18Sound NSD drivers, nor the Geddes' 15" waveguide.


I want the extra efficiency and extension of the 15", but if I can't find a suitable HF it'll be TD12M + BMS 4552ND + XT1086

I run an old Radian that is equiv. to the 745, but it doesn't go nearly as high. Not a bad driver, the 745 gets used in big hi-fi, AFAIK.

You might also look at the Beyma CP755. I've heard good things about it, tho have not heard it in the flesh.

Why a 1.4" for such a high XO point? 1" is more appropriate and cheaper.

The main thing is the horn has to be big enough, which is one of the places where manufacturers cut corners these days to save a few $$$.

CP755/Ti looks better than NdAL and better for the price. It comes clean from ~0.5 - 20kHz.

For 1" drivers, it's tough to find a combo that'll get to 1000hz. The BMS4552ND + XT1086 will just get there, but I don't think it would be ideal - no idea though: http://lscon.tripod.com/xt1086/SPL.jpg

Try a 1.st Order for the CD (not w/for too much power) with a 22ohm resistor (Att.11dB) and a 2,2uF cap (~2kHz)/Adjust. 1.st Order also for TD15M, maybe. It's just an idea, use 2.nd/3.rd Order on CD if the xover is lower than or you need full power. That should be very close.

Hi for PA levels, I wouldnt use my 1" driver crossed over at 1KHz, at home it is no problem. I use a RCF CD1710MT3 on RCF H100, the neodyme version is still available. The Celestion CDX1-1430 is also told to work that low on Stereolab 400 horn (home use).
For PA and home use I would think about bms 4554 and B&C ME90:

fb, maybe we are getting away from the price you had in mind. How are you with your project? For a PA the 1K xover would not be a problem but for high resolution (home/HiFi system) I would go with the <500Hz or >1600Hz region xover. Maybe that's not a difficult choice for you.

Inductor, and everyone else, thanks for your replies. The beyma stuff is getting a bit too expensive. And I want to avoid waveguides with sharp angles at the mouth or throat.

GM, I have considered getting a waveguide CNC cut to my specs, but am concerned about cost. Doing it by hand is beyond my skills and time availability I think.


Zilch, you seem to know your way around quite a few waveguides, what would you recommend for the 4550? Perhaps the low cost of the 4550 might offset the expense of getting a waveguide built.


Panomaniac, do you have any other experience with Radian drivers?

I suspect 4550 on XT1086 is going to get the job done for you, though I've never done more than bolt them together here.

A favorite of mine in this cost range is BMS 4555 on ~$100 1.5" JBL PT-F95HF, though I haven't tried running that combo below 1 khz. The square PT-H95HF will play lower, and is the best-sounding of the JBL PTs, in my view, if you can work with its additional depth and greater requisite c/c distance.

At some point, you've got to get empirical; there are thousands of possible combinations, and hundreds of members on this and other forums willing to speculate ad infinitum about what might work, when for ~$500 plus some filter design skills, all will be revealed, up close and personal....

You didn't listen to 4550+XT1086?

The 4555+JBL 1.5" probably won't work out, BMS' recommend 1000hz, and the waveguide's much harder for me to buy.



I think my 2 options at this point are therefore BMS4550 and Radian 745PB - parts express will do refund on the Radian's if I don't want them. Next step is to investigate the cost of waveguide construction, vs. driving to my nearest city and picking up the 18sound gear.
