forgive my ignorance of electronics but can someone please tell me if inductors can be wired in series to obtain a specific value, ie to obtain 5.7Mh can you combine 4.0Mh and 1.7Mh to obtain the required value.

You are correct - inductors in series, capacitors in parallel. Here's an info page:

Yes inductors add up like resistors when connected in series, capacitors do not.

Obviously though the DC resistance will also change

Edit..there will also be some 'mutual inductance' which need to be taken into account for effective application

Just don't stack the inductors up in a pile. Best to string them out and if they are air coils, orient the coils at 90 degree shift to one another. They will interact otherwise. Also, if you are using large metal sheet capacitors, you want to keep them away from this string of inductors about 4 inches or more.
