I have been thinking about using a small fullrange driver to run from around 300Hz upwards in a couple of different projects.
HiVi Research have two offerings both very similar:
http://www.swanspeaker.com/product/htm/view.asp?id=121
http://www.swanspeaker.com/product/htm/view.asp?id=120
The only real downside I can see to these is that Qts is very high.
Now Peerless are in on the game with their new driver:

Anybody used any of these three drivers and can pass comment? They all look very similar in performance from the graphs. Maybe I will just go with the A2S because it will cosmetically match the Jordan's on the front setup, and they are available in the UK easily.

A sealed chamber will only raise the Q further . I wouldn't like that on the A2S. Open baffle might be OK.
I have just got some 4 inch drivers which I plan to use in an open baffle . The Qts is 1.47 !
If your bass driver is far away , 300Hz might be too high to crossover if you do not want imaging issues.
Cheers.

At very low SPL it may be ok

In his study of small drivers Zaph concluded that none of the drivers smaller than 3" were really worthy of consideration. http://www.zaphaudio.com/smalltest/
I recently fired up a set of the 3" Fostex FF85k (as per standard procedure around here, modified) on a test open baffle. Really quite excellent -- these could give a lot of more expensive tweeters a run for their money. I expect to get 100 Hz (althou at limited levels) out of them when i get them in a box.

Yes... not for extension in a midrange, bit for sonics.

Thanks, but I can't really see how you drew that conclusion. He hasn't even tested any 2 inch fullranges, only mid domes. Bear in mind I'm using it as a mid-tweeter, not a fullrange.

I think he has changed things around *i just quickly found that link)... his original report had a number of 2" and none of them were as good up high as the best of the 3" he tested. And the 3" i mentioned is decidedly better than the best 3" he had done.

Hi,
An obvious use of a 2" is Linkwitz's Pluto.
Zaph's dismissal of 2" drivers is in regards of full range, 3" is best IHO.
Once you add an extra driver or two you are talking mid/treble or treble only.
Reality always bites and whilst 3" drivers are punishingly inefficient,
full range 2" drivers are ludicrously inefficient. Discussing Qts of 2"
drivers is pretty pointless because used at any reasonable level
farfield they should be used well away from Fs.
BTW where in the UK is the A2S easily available ?

If you need a 2" wide driver, I would look at the 2x3" from Tang band...
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=264-830
reasonable sensitivity for that size and fairly smooth response...

The 3" Fostex are not so bad. The FF85K is 88dB, the FE83 and 87 a bit more. I chose the FF85 because i can make it work in a 2 litre box.

Dyna A25? World Design has a remake of that classic.

Hi,
I don't they count as full range in Zaph's regimen due to pathetic Xmax.
I'd class them as mid/treble unless they are back horn loaded low down.

We'll soon see how they do... µFonkens are being built. Really intended to be used as sats with a sub thou.
