Interesting idea. Apply multiple thin coats of 2 or three different coloured paint, sand through some layers in various areas. Time consuming and labour intensive, but could give fantastic results.
Do you have any pictures of this finish? I'm thinking I'll give it a try, just to see how it turn out.

Not sure if this is the technique you are referring to but this is an example of faux finishing. I.m also interested in building this speaker and am seeking plans.

Really, faux finishing refers to any time you make one type of surface look like another, not just exotic woods. You could make your speakers look like marble if you want.
