So which one is better in terms of performance vs. price? Is the Amek M-2500 preamp any better (lower noise maybe because of the parallel input transistors)? I'm looking for an 'utility mic pre' for multitrack (8 ch) recording on DAW. Also some people claim for the VLZ Pro preamps. Jensen transformers might sound good but they are expensive. HOw about the sound.westhost.com mic pre (http://sound.westhost.com/project66.htm)?

Well, i havent tried to build any of them, only used them, but AMEK is famous for its micpreamps, as well as midas and to some extent soundcraft.
I dont like the sound of VLZ at all.
I think the westhost drawing is worth a try, it is atleast not any greater cost involved in it and it is quite similar to amek too.
