I noticed that loosely coupled foam ear plugs improved my age related hearing degradation, Specifically polyphonic smear.
I had moved to favoring monotonic styles of music but discovered loosely inserted foam earplugs have eliminated slurring almost completely.
Increased room volume is required but it's still a interesting improvement.

The foam likely creates a band pass for a specific range, they claim a 20db reduction I believe, but don’t say where exactly.
Maybe you are becoming more sensitive to some frequencies?

My hearing cutoff is around 7k.
Well within the 88 key piano. The problem is (better word )be smearing.
More than one instrument sounds like soup until using the plugs.
