Headphone Interconnect Length

I have a set of Sennheiser hd600 headphones with the OEM, 10', 1/8", cable. That setup sounds good to me. I've also got an unbranded 10' extension (probably WalMart); it looks OK, with decent 1/4" connectors, and substantial cable. However, when the extension is connected the sound quality drops audibly.

I know the subject of h/p interconnects has been discussed ad nauseam. But, I'm wondering how to attribute the sq loss. Maybe there is an optimum length for h/p cables (10' +/-), maybe the cabling need to be consistent (weakest link); maybe in-line connectors are a bad idea.

It would be nice to be able to have a longer leash, but I don't want to have to experiment with pricey, audiophile interconnects.

Thoughts appreciated
