Does U5,6 need to be fixed to the PCB with some kind of thermally conductive cement before SMD soldering? I notice there is some sort of PCB heatsink underneath them?

Use solder paste for these parts - the bottom pad is the thermal pad to conduct to the PCB. Heat the PCB with paste and part on a hot plate skillet or use a hot air gun from above.

Ideally it should be soldered on the thermal pad to the bias below for optimal performance as this chip can dissipate significant power when operated from +/-15v rails and if asked to drive low impedance loads (600ohms). The data sheet says that it can be left isolated or connected to Vee. Thermal paste dab might work ok, but I can’t say how robust the operation will be. The chip does get hot.

You can order the paste in a $10 syringe and apply a dab of it and heat with an iron from below even. But a hot skillet like used for cooking can certainly be used to solder parts like this easily and is much better than hand soldering with an iron.

If you do a search on YouTube of “SMT soldering hot plate” you will see how easy it is.

Or you can order the prepopulated SMT boards.

When soldered correctly, is the space under the chip full of solder or look the same as a new board?

I finally got a chance to assemble the BTSB SMT v1.2. Will test tomorrow - need to assemble some Molex KK connectors between the source and the amp.

Solder paste applied with syringe and tapered plastic nozzle (blue one), hot plate on bottom and hot air pencil on top:


Bottom side has bypass caps all done with paste and hot air pencil:


Then through hole parts were quick and easy:

Recently I see people are using a layer of sand on the bottom of the fry pan to make the heat very even. I have not found this to be necessary and feel that sand might contaminate the PCB. But it would make the heat a lot less damaging if you did not monitor the temps carefully with an IR thermometer.

Binocular magnifiers and good high quality tweezers are very important. Invest $20 in a pair of Swiss made tweezers. They are an extension of your fingers and good ones give you the control and precision needed. $4 ones can work too but eventually, you will find them to either bend, break, or not be precise enough.
