I measured a whole pot of Vishay TLDR4400 for a couple of Hypnotize boards and found them to have a nice tight Vf distribution around 1.8V - perhaps an alternative?

Indeed, :D I have measured those up and they are quite precise.
Another one under review is Kingbrights L-934LID same 1.8v Vf. quite tight as well.

Both of these are more than adequate here. For the DCB1 and Folded FSP, the kingbright WD2773 offered a way to plop them in without measuring and get an expected outcome for voltage. It makes things easier for builders of those boards. Here we are just not trying to shoot too high with vf. There are a few off the shelf Red LEDs that are 2.2vf, so one does not want to advise on color alone.:)
