WAW dipole

Hi Stefan,

That looks not too bad... maybe a few dBs better than reality, but that´ll depend on the room. Go for it, make a cheap chipboard mockup where you can easily and without big losses change the shape, get a variation of XO parts to play with them, and once everything is sorted out, make a nice and refined second build.

Good luck, looking forward to see your results! And feel free to ask away...

Here's the mock-up. Still haven't bought measurement mic, so no hints on SPL specs yet. So far welded the full range drivers' terminals to some nice van den hull cables and to a set of binding posts. Big woofers arrived with binding posts already, so I'm going just with a cable straight from the amp. Turned them on once, sounded horrible :D:rolleyes:

Went with a digital crossover after all (all digital inputs and outputs - mini DSP nanodigi), trying to find a second power amp now. Put the crossover on 300 Hz, 4th Li-Riley.
As for the baffles, I've tried with shorter ones, angled... It all looked weird. This current version is with perpendicular panels to the floor, where full range driver sits at around ear height (98-99cm).

Any thoughts?

How to measure this thing with rew? I've tried several shots so far, but I can't find the option for a gated window, just smoothing. Can I do it outside the house, perhaps a bit lifted?

Thanks for your inputs :)

Hi Stefan,

I fear that 4th order will not work nice. You´ll need a filter to equalize the inherent 6dB/oct rise of the woofers, then you´ll need to add the "real" filter to meet the FR drivers.
A simple passive first attempt could be made with a L of, let´s say 6,8mH in series with the woofers and 100uF in parallel. FR´s straight to the amp, but padded down to meet the woofers sensitivity. Don´t play that too loud. Adjust values to taste and listen to some music, before starting your measurement adventures!

Hello, this will be the final update to this project! I had the speakers made finally.

Cabinets made out of 5 cm (2 inch) MDF with a walnut veneer, 55 cm width, around 110 cm height. Flush front design, mirrored full range driver position, internal cable wiring, rounded edges.
Ended up using two 12 inch woofers and a full range , all made by Sonido in Budapest.

Total expense - 2000 euros, more or less.

Waiting for a good deal on tube amp now to complete the setup. 🙂

Thanks everyone for posting, it really helped a lot!

I edited my previous post.

500Hz is fine, especially with that smaller driver.
I'd actually expect it to have a tough time below 350Hz

Going to 500Hz will just give you more meat on the bone. It's a good thing.

Since you are doing the XO active, try a few different slopes.
I had my OBs running with a Harsch XO and it was very nice.

Film is unbeatable, at least for private usage and modest size prints. All those photos are completely unedited!

Well, it did have a hard time under 350 Hz, this baffle is somewhat wider now. But either way it needs additional gain under 300 Hz and with 1.8 mm of travel you can do it only once :D I might even go as high as 600 Hz. I don't see the reason not to push the 12 inch drivers to 600ish Hz, they should start beaming at least twice the frequency.

I will surely try other options, but too bad this version does not have FIR filters.
