Fostex FF85wk and Alpair 5.2 are my goto small drivers.
Scan 10F/8424 is really aa midrange, the more affordable 8414 looks more like a FR (i have not heard the latter).
For cheap drivers teh TC9 gets lots of recommendations but i found them very disappointing. Thr TG9 is dramatically better. The Aura NS3 (now some of the Dayton drivers) are decent and one of the few that gets decent LF extention in a sealed box.
There are lots of others, but those are the ones i have heard that are work commenting on.

I've been drawn to the 4 x 2.5" short array (7th veil, nonsuch 4), those has 26cm2.
4 = area of 2 x 4", but wider dispersion.
Never built it though.
I read years back there was a 4 driver array of 3" (w3 871s) that he liked.
My 2x4" was head in a vise vertical dispersion, so i think at 7' it may be similar, idk.
I was looking at 2" w2-803 but the high fs, i could never figure what to do with most 2" without crossing over.
Keep posting, i look forward to any mini array setups.

My favorite AuraSound NSW2-326-8AT Whisper 2" Extended Range Speaker Driver 8 Ohm. Very flat response, low distortion. I hot glue a 6" long piece of steel / iron pipe 1.5" ID stuffed with fiberglass until almost no sound comes out the back. Mount in a baffle of choice. The mass of the pipe, you are shooting for something 500 - 1000 x the mass of the cone, keeps this lightweight driver from bending your front baffle. Also: are you using any EQ?
Also also: who in your household will be listening (age, gender, musical taste)?
For example, if you were considering between these two drivers:
SB Test Bench - SB Acoustics SB65WBAC25-4 2.5” full-range driver | audioXpress
Scan-Speak Test Bench - Scan-Speak 10F/8414G10 Small 3.5” Full-Range Woofer | audioXpress
...the Scan-Speak looks technically superior:
- cleaner waterfall plot
- more SPL capability
- much better on- and off-axis frequency response plots
- the manufacturer's spec sheet is lot more accurate
However, the SB, for all it's relative flaws on paper, might be a better choice for a minimalist system (no EQ), if the only listener(s) will be men of middle age and beyond. This is gently implied in the Madisound blurb:
"This speaker is getting out beyond 20,000Hz with a rising response. That rise is thought to be beneficial to listeners whose hearing is rolling off in the upper frequencies."
No problem, wrote it and then realised I was in the Full Range and not the Multiway forum. As you say, it is a good mid driver to work with a woofer and a tweeter in a 3 way but not as a full range.
It all depends on what you plan to do with them?........not enough info in your initial post.
