To select the correct shim size ,place the voice coil within the magnet gap and try fitting one size ( presuming that you have been supplied with material that is about the full circumference of the voice coil) that you should cut into six strips and fit three of these equidistant apart, inside the voice coil former. The correct fit is obtained when the voice coil can be positioned up and down in the gap, without easily sliding out of place. Hopefully you will not have to do many trials before finding the best fit. When you are satisfied with the selected shim thickness, adding the next three shims ( possibly with some trimming, depending on how neatly you cut the strips) should firm up the voice coil for setting the voice coil symmetrically about the pole plate.
