Hi,
I'm new.

I built a pair of Brines M10 A10 speakers using Mark Audio Alpair 10 drivers.* It is paired with a Tom Christensen (Neurochrome) design DG 300B valve amp I built.* I built a Douglass Self Turntable pre-amp and power supply for my Rega 3.

Now my son is building Tom's Mod86 solid state amp with his Diff8 preamp also Self turntable gear.
I've completed the table/enclosure for the amp and I am getting ready to build him a set of speakers.

My question.
Madisound no longer shows the Alpair 10 driver.* Instead they have the Pluvia.* Yet it's not on the Mark Audio site.**
Confusing

Are the two drivers* similar?* The Bob Brines MLTL's are designed for the Alpair 10.

Thanks
Luke

You may have had a glitch, since all current Alpair models appear to be present & correct on the Madisound site, with the three A10 variations about 1/2 - 2/3 down this page: https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.c...ch&search_in=all&search_str=Alpair+10&x=0&y=0
Just type 'Alpair 10' into the search box.
Also to be found under the 'Approx 6"' category (Madisound list drivers by frame diameter rather than Sd) along with the Pluvia 11s https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/approx-6-fullrange/

Individual pages:
-10P https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.c...rkaudio-alpair-10p-a-paper-cone-6-full-range/
-10M [Grey] https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.c.../markaudio-alpair-10-grey-6-full-range-gen-2/
-10M [Gold] https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.c.../markaudio-alpair-10-gold-6-full-range-gen-2/

Mark Audio's own website is in dire need of an update; they just haven't had time to do anything about it while concentrating on getting their sister (commercial) company up and running.

Luke,

No experience with the Pluvia drivers yet, but considering parentage, material, cone size, and description in the product brochure, there should be some similarities. Probably Dave, Chris, Scott or Stefan would be able to elaborate more.

Here's a link to the product brief:

And here's link to a review of Pensils for Pluvia 11:

NIce work with the speakers, amp, and the cosole.

@Scottmoose and @zman01

Thank you very much for taking the time to post the links with information on the Alpair and Pluvia Mark Audio speakers.

I'm relieved that the Alpair line is still available. I'm extremely happy with my speakers and I want my son to have a similar sound. It will be interesting to hear the difference between the valve amp and the solid state amp.

This issue is closed.

I will now start a thread seeking assistance with a hum problem when my phono input is selected.

Also about an enclosure I built for a friend's 300B

All-the-best

Luke

Luke,

I've run the Alpair 10.3 with the Modulus-86 - nice match, I think you will like the sound. But it is different from the 300B. :)

If time allows and you feel like it, post some build pics of the new set of speakers you are planning to put together.

Outstanding news! Will do.

I want to match the amp/table with zebra wood for the face and top and quarter sawn white oak on the sides. Zebra wood is finicky when it's re-sawn or other wise so I have ordered zebra wood veneer from Certainly Wood. I am having them ship it to Superior Veneer where a PSA (Peel-n-Stick) backing will be applied. This is easier than dealing with mixing the glue and putting it in a veneer bag.

It will work out great because the face is recessed. I will cut the holes using a veneer trim bit, This shouldn't shatter the the veneer.

PSA is a great way to go. I recovered a friend's Linn sub's with cherry PSA. Line it up, start in the middle and pull the backing as you work up and down to smooth any bubbles. Then trim with a router. I like a shellac french polish top coat. It's easy, forgiving, applied by hand, and looks IMO better than any lacquer I've ever sprayed.

The flange of the stupid baffle is curved. Other than a 1/32" for the edge of the plastic it can't be flush. Believe me I thought a lot about the aesthetics of that port.

I'm not-so-sharp on specifications for speakers .....and a lot of other things.
DDR? I'm guessing something to do with dynamic range
