I plan on getting the 3" and the 4" for testing purposes.

They are available locally, so that makes it easy.

Got ideas on a box to put them in?

I already have a pair of TABAQs to try them in...

Otherwise, I'm opened to suggestions.

0.40x mini Karlsonator.

DCR

FAST with a good 8in woofer and miniDSP.

Although looking at that response curve it looks not very good with sharp edge plateaus dips and peaks all over the place. It will sound colored and have ringing.

1.6kHz is very noticeable spot. 4.8kHz and 7khz are also problem areas.

Can you get Peerless P830986 in Taiwan? That driver was one of preferred drivers in Round 2 and is smoother than this one.

I think you can also get Faital Pro's although not cool looking like this, are smooth and super sensitive. Try 3FE22 8ohms.

Sorry X,

I didn't see you add-on ...

No Peerless over here. No Faital either.
Sure I can get from abroad, but it's just not practical. I just priced a pair of TC9FD at $25, plus $50-60 shipping... duh!

Some (most!) of those drivers are made here in Taiwan, or next door, in China, but most companies that have their drivers made overseas, have policies not to sell directly from the factory.

I was in touch with some Gome Sound engineer (they make a LOT of drivers) and I mentioned I wanted to buy something similar to the TC9FD. He said that he would design a driver that would be even better that that Vifa... that was 5 months ago... no news. That guy seems to have vanished. (Although I was not holding my breath either... I kinda knew this was not going to go anywhere when he mentioned the redesigning of the driver! Just for me? yeah, right!)

It sounds like the Aucharm drivers are a better option for you. No point in paying more than a driver is worth to have it shipped.

RE the slightly ragged response: think of it as an opportunity for tweaking! I often prefer to start with a slightly underdamped driver, and treat the cone with dammar or other special sauce to get it just right:). It's easy to add more damping, but difficult or impossible to take it back.

IME, there's always a balancing act between damping and detail. 90's style tupperware (polypropylene) cones measured great with ruler flat response, but sounded lifeless and artificial. The other extreme are undamped paper cone full ranges with lots of bell resonances built in. These can sometimes take your ear off. Ideal to me is slightly underdamped with some room for tweaking. Like for example the Aucharm. :D
