PRV 5MR450-NDY for FAST/WAW applications

Thanks for those simulations, Byrtt. I think they match the hash we see in the measurement a near 10k. But as I recall, it doesn’t sound too bad in reality. Sounds quite nice actually and probably not as rough as the simulations are predicting.

From Vintage Audio (above):

Welcome : )

Probably you right about the 10k hash in that here is IR/SR (48kHz rate) prediction for 0 deg axis trapezoidal baffle and Nautaloss rear chamber from that previous link:

Same trapezoidal baffle and Nautaloss rear chamber but a sum of the four axis at 0/15/30/45 deg:

And here is IR/SR (48kHz rate) prediction for member Vintage Audio Projec's 5MR450-NDY horn bandpass named "horn hi pass + EQ" (blue curve), and it seems have similarities to above sum of 0/15/30/45 deg axis:

Now i don't know if your sound conclusion is based on 5MR450-NDY as direct raditor on trapezoidal baffle and Nautaloss rear chamber or 5MR450-NDY tractrix horn loaded, but think that post 538 visual analysis is educating pointer to look for clues of direct sound verse later reflections from room/enviroment mix because there looks be non ideal flaws up there in tweeter band teritory.

I concur!
They sound absolutely phenomenal to Me, they’ve replaced 2-pairs of JBL6208 studio monitors I’ve been listening to the past 15+years “currently one set is collecting dust in My storage locker”
I enjoy their sound so much that I’m trying other new combinations!
The studio monitors are as flat as it gets but they sound like You’re listening to the speakers rather than a performance.

Thanks sound conclusion/experience.

If I’m looking at the right driver, the scanspeak 10F is VERY different driver as far as efficiency and power handling.
Scanspeak 10F 8ohm 86.6 dbspl and 15 Watts
VS
PRV 450 8ohm 94dbspl and 225 Watts
Even if they sound similar, each would fill a whole different need.
Perhaps I’m looking at the wrong scanspeak driver?

You're looking at the correct driver.
Both will be loud enough for me. I'm interested in the actual sound differences, not the specs.

I’m obviously clueless how they compare in sound, contemplating it has Me wondering the effects of dynamics with efficiency.
I now need to research Our abilities to hear volume and the effects of power vs driver efficiency to meet Our abilities.
I’m wondering if My love for this driver “and other high efficient drivers” is due to their amplitude.

You can listen for yourself in the comparison threads. I kept everything the same except the driver and recorded several tracks.

Subjective Comparison Threads

The PRV is here:
A Subjective Blind Comparison of 3in to 5in Full Range Drivers

The 10F is here I think:
A Subjective Blind Comparison of 3in to 5in drivers - Round 2

A Subjective Blind Comparison of 2in to 4in drivers - Round 3

A Subjective Blind Comparison of 2in to 4in drivers - Round 4

A Subjective Blind Comparison of 2in to 3.5in drivers - Round 5

The 10F is one of the top ranked ones for overall neutrality and plays all music well. In a horn it can gain 10dB sensitivity if that matters. The PRV is a unique driver capable of very high level clean output. It sounds a little more “raw” like a live concert whereas the 10F is more refined like a listening room.

just a glimpse of my 3 way active OB with an influence from kyron kronos but using the shape of my local culture, all pro audio drivers. the hardest part of basket routing shape of bigger driver are completed, I'm a little OCD to match basket curve :) for PRV i might just use egg curved shape to reduce air blocking.

PRV baffle is separated from below baffle to avoid any vibration, the baffles will be glued + screw enforcement.

hopefully they will slam in my house :D

spare some time for my hobby, from my previous plan to make 3 way (nu3000dsp + minidsp 2x4hd) become 4 way and i need to get another minidsp. I'm using beston rt002-dipole with removed waveguide as super tweeter

back support template completed, will be followed by cutting 2 layers plywood of 18mm

Very impressive setup this will be, Gadut. Why don’t you get a 2x8 DSP? I have run two independent 2x4’s and that works too but have to program it twice.

Check out Analog Devices ADAU1452 eval board. $250 I know but very powerful SigmaDSP studio software and FIR capability. Plus you can add your own I2S input or output.

I had plan to use nanosharc and build my own multichannel dac but then it's too complicated for me. I decided to build 4 channel monoblock amplifier and put each 2x4HD on each amplifier box

i chose HD version due to standard 2V output, lower noise and better parts used compared non HD version. FIR is a nice feature but not my priority because i will start with Harch xo. i think duplicating config file 2x is simpler than playing with dsp encoding + i2s :D

i'm more to hardware man instead of software, i might still cut plywood in the next 2yrs building speaker set and room treatment

2nd set of minidsp 2x4hd arrived and 1 side baffle is completed. I'm ordering class d amplifier D4K5 with 90Vdc supply for subwoofer and apex B500tef for woofer.

since PRV has power rating, i might try b500tef just in case it matches with good class AB or A

I'm thinking this might be close:

Beyma :: Beyma 5G40Nd/N PS82.76
I had the PRV drivers for about a year now and love what they do.
I recently blew a driver and ordering two replacement drivers to the UK was proving to be very expensive so Vic suggested I go for the Beyma Beyma 5G40Nd
I only had them playing for a day but I am pretty impressed. In my set up they extend better and the sound is a bit more natural. I am needing a bit more support from the bass more but this will probably improve as the system burns in
For those of us in the UK, it is a good alternative to the PRV for FAST applications

That Beyma looks very similar to the PRV, basket, magnet, cone, surround, terminals. Wonder if that is same OEM? Specs look very good - the 92dB is proabnoymmore conservative rating?

Beyma 5G40Nd/N - 5" 200W 8 Ohm PS82.76

They're are different beast for a lot of characteristics. Voicecoil length, gap height, voicecoil wire material, qts, number of magnet, flat impedance curve of the PR wich suggest big demodulation rig(s) around the gap..., floppy suspension of the PRV (qms=22 !!).

But still similar response curves.

An update to my design.. I came across a cheap pair of Azurahorn 160, so i've made corner bass cabinets and a conical insert for the horn to accept the smaller 5MR450

Active XO for now, sounds amazing! Super dynamic
