I once used a Yamaha receiver that had a 4ohm setting. That was about 7 years ago. I guess it couldn't handle 4ohms well or something. Anyways, it was terrible on that setting. Really cut the power output.

But I don't really know amps at all. Tube amps confuse me even more.

Valve amps tend to be sensitive to over-voltage (from a lighter load) the way a solid state amp may not like over-current (from a heavy load), so while a higher apparent load impedance may be a sonic choice I'd stop short of declaring it a 'safer' option with a valve amp.
