which would you pick as the driver for a Cornu made from 24" X 24" ply, Fostex Fe83En or FF85k - and why ?

or would you pick the TC9FD if price was not a deciding factor ?

I haven't tried either of those Fostex drivers, but I do know that the TC9FD sounds good in a Cornu. The Fostex may work very well - the sims certainly support it. There is less xmax on the Fostex so it really needs an optimized BLH to squeeze the bass out. The Vifa with its higher Qts gets lower bass. Between these, I would pick the Vifa. No one has tried the FF85WK so it would be great to get another data point. It won't sound bad - I just can't be sure it will sound great.

And, this is a bit OT, but if you had a corner to work with, instead of a flat wall for a Cornu described in this thread so far, how would you take advantage of it - is there an obvious way to bend a cornu into a corner ?

You could just mount it on the corner angled at 45 deg out. The bass will still escape the sides and you will get 6dB boost to bass. You can also mount on one wall flat near a corner and that works fine too.

The whole idea behind a Cornu is zero footprint, high WAF and to see the expression on your friends' faces. If you start redesigning it as a single horn that's fine but it's not a new or particularly exciting idea and it's not a Cornu. If you corner mount it, you have wasted the space behind it and besides, high quality corner horns have been around for a long time.

Methinks you guys are thinking either too much or too little. Time to go build a 48"er.

With me its always too much thinking!

Still, the Cornu got me wondering about how the technique could be applied to other situations - I don't know of any corner horns made out of this foam backed board stuff and a glue gun.

Here is a foam core and hot melt glue corner BLH. It is a floorsstander though.

Those FE83 can sound kind of harsh and tinny. But can work in a 20in to 24in x 2.75in to 3.25in deep Cornu. For foam core, 20in x 2.75in is fine and preferable.
