Generally to lower the baffle-step point; sometimes to change the wavelaunch / edge diffraction characteristics.

Let me add a couple pragmatic additional reasons:
1/ the driver is deeper than the box and cabinet depth needs to be increased. Often happens in a BIB, and i personally had this issue when i put FE103A into BK101.
2/ to cover a mistake up (ask Steven (aka Italynstallion) about this, not really his mistake)
3/ make it easy to try different drivers in the same box (our upcoming build of Maeshowe)
