We have no control over externally linked pictures because they are held on an external hosting site of the posters choosing. As soon the user deletes the images, perhaps to free up space, or perhaps they delete their account with that hosting site, then all the content disappears.
So those images never make it to diyAudio proper, we are just a portal that enables them to be viewed as long as they remain where they originally were.
The only way to ensure they remain for good is for members to do as Cal mentions, which is for posters to attach them using the forums own upload facility. That ensures they are stored with diyAudio and forever linked to the post in question.
