Also consider current sensor ICs, they have 3kV isolation.

Sorry, forgot to check this thread for replies recently lol.

I bought a couple Allegro A1324's last week after I saw someone claim they will work on 3.3VDC for VCC, which makes them easier to interface with an ESP, which also runs from 3.3V.
And they are cheap enough to give them a go.

I need to power one up, and see what kind of output I get when I put it by an AC line drawing current.

If these don't work, I'm looking at a few other options.
Current transformer is one option.
Zwave outlet (My HA system has a zwave controller) that can monitor current is another option.
