Depends on your level of commitment. By which I really mean how much you are willing to spend

Something like this will get you a long way without being major $$. I've used it a few times and it's a good value.
Stahl Tools TCSS Temp Controlled Soldering Station ESD Safe 374-200

This is the station that I normally use. It hasn't failed me yet. You wouldn't need anything better unless you go pro or decide to solder every day.
Weller WES51 Soldering Station 372-145

Best,
Nelson

Depends on how much you have to spend and where you live.

Suggested (and recommended):

temperature controlled (your control)
60W-120W
A few different types of tips

I am using the fine Metcal and suggest it altho this unit is anything but cheap.

Features 'smart heat' and exchangeable tips.

I solder quite a bit but just use a cheap soldering iron.
I did buy a couple of soldering stations but they died pretty quickly so I went back to just a simple cheap soldering iron and that has done well for about 3 years now just needing a couple of new bits.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I bought a cheep iron from RadioShack awhile back but It is very bad. The tip won't get hot enough to melt the solder and the handle gets way to hot. I don't want to make the same mistake twice so I'm willing to invest a bit on my next iron. Money is all ways a concern so I'm looking for a the best value out there

I have one at work (my own), another at home and a spare power supply and wand though in 10+ years I've never had a failure. That's how much I don't want to be without it. We've bought 3 at work (besides mine) off eBay for $175, $190 and $250. Also my previous employer has 6 units - all from eBay. I've been soldering 50 years and nothing else comes close. Just my $0.02

might depend on where you live

I have a very nice Weller Magnastat for mains voltage
also have a nice gas iron, but ignition needs repair
but I definately could use a solder station

on low budget I find the new RS DS50 very interesting
