I have been listening to the Black for a few days now and they sound perfect! The sound signature is somewhere between a Gold Lion 300b and a JJ 300b. There is a bit more bass than the Gold lion, but not as much as the JJ. The mids and highs are almost the same as the gold lion.
construction feels solid, Thick glass is used and I can tell a lot of care has gone into the black plate, The tube elements are aligned almost identically between both tubes. even the labeling is on the same side on both tubes. JJ and gold lion tend to be pretty random in respect to that.
Both black plates tested within 1% plate current on my freshly calibrated and restored Hickok kS-15874-L2.
Another thing I noticed is that the heater has a different glow to that of the Gold Lion and JJ. it has more of an orange glow. Also, when I turn i'f my Tu-8600 the black plates are silent like the JJ as the tube cools off. unlike the Gold lion that can sound like an aluminum can getting crunched slowly, The heater on those contract too much, that's probably why I've had 3 pairs of Gold Lion fail in the same way.
Anyways, the black plates are my new favorite 300b! and at the price they are hard to beat. I'll be tracking the life of the tubes with my tester to see how they compare against the JJ, which have almost 2500 hours and tested almost within 10% pate current of the new black plate. In comparison the Gold lion with about 1500 hours tested within 60% and the Gold lion with the bad heater tested within 30%.
