Tantalums to replace the E-CAPS?

My 12yr-old CD transport Servo PCB is densely populated with cheap electrolytics. With age, i would think it is time for a change in the caps.My intention is to replace the 20 odd pieces of 47uf/10v e-caps and a couple of 4700uf/16v and 2200uf/16v e-caps. I realise that audio grade caps are physically larger than the stock caps in my transport.

Now the thing is -- i intend to replace the 20 odd pieces of the low capacitance and low voltage (47uf/10v) e-caps with tantalum caps.The tantalums are certainly smaller in size and fits the space on the PCB.

Question is ----- will the tantalums be a good replacement? Or would u think that it will not be worthwhile doing the replacements since there is no advantage of using tantalums over the e-caps?

IMO:

- the tantalum caps tend to sound harsh & dry. I wouldn't touch those for audio stuff.

- It may be a good idea to replace the 47uf/10V caps with something slighly bigger in value - Panasonic FC 220uf/25V - also cheap - if they can fit;

- if you decide to go over budget and buy some Black Gates you may stick to 47uf/>10V or go even lower, but watch out for ceramic/film bypasses which can have a negative on their overall behaviour - very bright/harsh/noisy sound.

- Sanyo OSCON is very good for the digital section, you can go lower than 47uf, but keep the 10V in mind.

- for the 4700 & 2200 caps Panasonic FC series will work like a charm.
 
Try Rubycon ZA and some Panasonic FC and BC136. Very fine.

Your description look for the VRDS10 or 10SE. I'm right?

Replace the 2200uF by 4700uF

Replace C56 by a MKP (polypro) 0.1uF.
 
You have to remove the large ceramic or film bypasses for the Rubycon ZAs to avoid ringing problems and install much smaller values (lower than 1000pf or so). I had lots of troubles when using ZAs to replace caps in various gear, made the sound screechy & harsh. Had absolutely 0 probs with OSCONs and Pana FC in this regard.
