Default Philips CD960 PLAY function problem

Hello,

I'm restoring a Philips CD960 and I've run into a problem with the PLAY function.

I'll try and explain..

If I load a disc the player quickly reads the TOC but if I select PLAY it just continues to spin the disc and it won't play the track selected.

BUT if I start the player in service mode 3 it plays perfectly (sounds great too) and I can move between tracks using the search buttons (as described in the service manual). Once going in service mode 3 it'll continue to play just fine. So, the laser is focus is obviously fine and the radial motor is able to move the arm.

I don't know the correct terminology but the player is failing to 'lock' onto the track selected somehow. I think maybe there's an issue with one of the requisite signals between the various IC's?

Laser power is correctly set at around 600mV and the focus offset is OK.

I have replaced the five electrolytic capacitors on the board under CDM1 mech.

The swingarm moves freely.

Any ideas? I'm stuck.

I have a CRO and a copy of the service manual.

Hi Mike P. I too have a CD960 that I inherited from a good friend. Powers up but doesn't read discs. Would you be able to tell me where you found the service manual, and what is a CRO? Rather a newbie too fixing my own stuff.
Regards, Kevin

CRO = Cathode Ray Oscilloscope

You can download the service manual here: HiFi Engine | Owners and Service Manuals

The CD960 is the same as the Marantz CD94mk1 so if you can find the service manual for that it'll do.

First clean the lens (fog the lens with your breath then polish dry with a Q-tip)

Then replace the 33uF blue coloured Philips axial capacitor on the small PCB under the laser mech. The four Nichicon radials will almost certainly be OK but you can replace them to if you like.

Edit: Probably best take it to someone more experienced if you aren't confident about tackling it.

That much of a newbie to electronics that I just think of an Oscilloscope as it is. Not distinguishing between CRT, LCD LED types. Yes, some of the newer ones would be awesome to have, but are bloody pricey. I have a Tektronix 2225 that my brother gave me recently - it needs new caps in the HV supply evidently.

Thanks for the advice for the CD960. I will try the basic cleaning first. Thereafter I will rather take it to a gent who specialises in digital repairs, from CDPs to scopes, mixing consoles etc. Basic soldering and replacing of components I can do, but definitely only in the learning phase of electronics.

Just BTW, I have a fully functioning Marantz CD94. Incredibly well built machines. This one was serviced just before I bought it from an elderly gent three years ago.

Reminds me a friend DJ who was doing a wedding with our gear and phoned me telling me the left Player was louder than the right one on both DJ console & CD. "I have to raise all the gain in order to have the same volume...." At a Ball pause moment, I tried first troubleshooting steps by phone and as we couldn't find the fault, I grabbed some new cables & another mixer & drove to the venue in order find out the crossfader on the mixing desk was shifted to one side... "It is disabled in software" he said... obviously wasn't.

We are surrounded by functions & knobs that sometimes we don't figure out the basics.
