Default Meridian 602 modern IR receiver replacement?

Meridians 600 series from the 90s use a Sharp GP1U521X IR receiver module, running a 38KHz carrier.

Im wondering if a Sharp GP1UX511QS might work as a modern replacement (also 38KHz).. Does anyone know?

Here are the links for the datasheets for each:

GP1U521X:

GP1UX511QS

They look pretty similar, including the internal block diagram. One difference is the lack of shielded can the old one uses (I can re-use the can from the erratic old one).
