Meridian 602 modern IR receiver replacement?

Meridians 600 series from the 90s use a Sharp GP1U521X IR receiver module, running a 38KHz carrier.

Im wondering if a Sharp GP1UX511QS might work as a modern replacement (also 38KHz).. Does anyone know?

They look pretty similar, including the internal block diagram. One difference is the lack of shielded can the old one uses (I can re-use the can from the erratic old one).
