Many channels on the cheap?

More of a high level question. I have read non-specific references to using multiple 2 channel USB DACs to do multichannel audio (say Ambiophonics) from a computer. So is this possibly achieved using a USB hub connecting multiple DACs? My question is about the theoretical or practical upper limit to this application. Can this be done up to something fairly large, say 12 channels? Or does one get restricted by something like a bandwidth or address limit in the USB communications or hub hardware or software?

Linux, absolutely. It makes for an ugly ALSA table, but doable for sure.

Windows, I'm not sure.

Another, higher cost and a bit more complex option (albeit an inexpensive way into the "high end" dac chips), is to use an XMOS implementation that goes USB->multichannel i2s, and provides a reliable master clock to drive everything.

E.g. XMOS Multichannel high-quality USB to/from I2S/DSD SPDIF PCB - DIYINHK
