My CDX 730e will read the majoritory of discs but there are some it just refuses to read and others may or may not work. Taking the lid off to see what's going on, a "good" disc will spin up quickly and in a vert short time be read and then stop spinning. An "in-between" disc will spin slowly, stop, spin slowly again, stop and then spin quickly and be read. Another time the same disc might well fail to be read. A "duff" disc will fail each time, spinning slowly a few times then giving up. I have cleaned the player but it still plays up. Is this the end of the road for the Yamaha or has anyone any ideas how to revive this old faithfull?

Not familiar with the player but if you have made certain the objective lens on the pickup is clean then the next step has to be to look at the RF signal on a scope to confirm quality and amplitude. Based on that an informed decision can be made as to whether the pick is suspect or not. Spindle motors of the cheapo DC Mabuchi type can play up. If suspect then disconnect from servo circuit and apply a 9 volt battery for a few seconds each way to "clean" up the commutator and retest.

The fault is probably either pickup or motor tbh. What mech etc does this player use ?
