I just bought a Marantz CD-73 (the early one) , which had a myriad of problems which I have managed to sort (power supply / muting relays etc) and now it plays perfectly except:

On track 4 or 5, depending on the cd, it starts misreading the disc. It does this in play mode, and also it will not read further when you try and skip tracks.

why does it always happen at the same point on the disc, regardless of disc? As I said, it plays perfectly till then.

Any pointers?

Nice player, where did you get it from?

The problem is probably due to resistance in the radial arm pivot, either because the bearing has a fault or because the arm is being fouled. To confirm, open the player's tray and turn it off. Give the laser head a gentle flick, it should move through its full range smoothly. If it doesn't, there's your problem.
