Anyone know the Krell KPS20i ?

What it actually does:
When I put the power on without a disk then lens moves one time up flashes red and the motor makes a one tenth turn max then it stops.
When I put a disc in and press play I hear some mechanical noise the disc turns the same amount and then nothing happens.
I have a servicemanual from the Philips CDM-9 Mod 4 but there's no flowchart just schematics and partnumbers and some graphs and voltagelevels.
This is the board underneath the CDM PRO9.

This PCB is a version also used in jukebox devices and broadcast devices (industrial version).

Just finished with swapping in the third laser and thought Bingo, it works.
Till the 5th track started and scratching noises appeared over the loudspeakers that intensified when consecutive tracks were played.
When I put in a CD with few tracks and runningtime like Diamond Life from Sade there's no problem, when I put in a CD with 20 tracks the music is unlisteble from track 4 or 5.
I'm really out of options now because there's no trimmer on the servoboard.

I bought a complete CD player with a advertized CDM9/60 (the Pro version) inside but when I took of the hood I immediately saw it was the CDM9/44 standard version. When I complained he basically said that he did not know it and I could drop dead.
Very nice indeed

I paid him 250 Euro's and another guy who sold them in Krell sparepart boxes 180 Euro's. Both laserunits were no good at all.
So in USD I'm 600.- lighter and still have no playing Krell KPS20i...

Happy Holidays nevertheless.

Similar behaviour I observe in the moment by an older Philips CD player CD824 (roughly equivalent to the Marantz CD-42), that is for service by me (with CDM4 mech. so as TDA8808T/TDA8809T in the RF/Servo section).
The RF signal is correct from the Vss value (that means, laser diode isn't muddy), but incorrect in order to the wave form. Noise and RF interference are superimposed. I will investigate the APC circuit so as the DC voltage line for the RF preamp section in the next time.
Unfortunately this model isn't a service-friendly model, so that I must create several test points for checking voltages and wave forms while the operating mode.

BTW - the CDM9 laser head was equipped with the first me known hologram laser diode like this:

Yeah it's really annoying.

I'm getting really confused about the differences between the:
Philips CDM9/44 & Philips CDM9/65

I know that the Philips CDM9/60 is the Pro version and the Philips CDM9/44 is the standard version with Mabuchi's RF-300C-11400 motor but what's the Philips CDM9/65?

I just bought two CDM9/44 units because I want to have the Krell running again as the Duson CD-100.
Are there any highend nineties players that have laserunits that are still fabricated or abudantly stashed.
Sony's KSS-151A is another "successtory" widely adopted in expensive Denon's, Wadia's and Spectrals.
They want us all to get streaming and throw away the archaic sources...:smash:

as I know, CDM9 exists with two motor versions: one with brushed Mabuchi spindle motor and one with brushless motor version. Maybe there was additional various versions in the turntable (motorpulley), but this I don't know exactly. At least by the CDM12.1/VAM1202 (same basic outline of motor pulley resp. spindle turntable) there was two different magnet forces inside, and thus two different associated clamper units in those loader devices.
Here some lists, that I have created in the last years - perhaps of interest:

Hi, i have krell kps20i and my magnet-star got damaged :(

Anyone know where i can buy kps20i quenched star magnet clamps ?

Please help me, my email is: :cop: email address removed. Please PM :cop:

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

This may not be directly helpful, but may give some clue, but this is exactly the sort of behaviour you get from the older CDM-4/etc. if the laser current is not adjusted quite in range. While this cdm obviously is meant to be fully auto-calibrating, it would seem to me that something is disturbing the auto-laser-current control. Sure would explain why one replacement laser worked much better than another. Without having a schematic of the cdm's servo board handy, the first two things I would do is check every resistor on that board & replace any that are at all out of spec, and then replace all of the lytic caps on the pcb, which aren't many.

Hi tiefbassebertr.
Do you still have access to the document concerning the CD ENGINE II industrial pcb?
The pcb of the CDM9, not that of the decoder
I am annoyed with a micromega drive(CDM9/65) which is equipped with it

ditto but does not bring anything at the schematic level but there are all the functions of each conductor on the connectors, suddenly it is much easier to find the problem without having to make a test bench with the pcb next to the mechanics

Anyone done any work on this "CD Engine II" set? I have a Sugden SDT-1 with this board set and CDM9/44 laser. The power supply had some issues and has been repaired. I also changed some caps on the two boards, and the two transistors that drive the table motor. I swapped laser out with know good unit but the problem remains.

Most times the disc will spin up and you hear the usual read noises but this continues and the display just shows "Err". Sometimes it will read the TOC very quickly and play perfect without a glitch. Ive not been able to discern any pattern.

Boards a have been checked for dry joints and interconnections cleaned.

It seems to be on first read like it cant lock-on. Some observation - at first start sometimes the disc spins back briefly. If I invert the mech it reads every time (gravity affecting focus offset?)

Very difficult to work on in this unit since the power & micro board sits on top of the "Engine" board and servo is mounted under the mech.

Any help gratefully received.

I no longer remember which CI I changed on my card, I can tell you this evening, but it has been working perfectly since.
