Makes headless control difficult, and it did not drive a directly connected display at all.

Moode works fine, but IIRC I had to have a display, mouse and keyboard connected to it initially to set up a wireless connection. In fact, I can use Moode with a mouse and a TV as a display for direct control, no PC or network needed.
As noted in post #5.... this is how you get the locally attached HDMI display to show MoOde ..

I loaded Roon on the PC today, Roon tells me it's accessing the Hifiberry via airplay so I finally got to play some music through the 'berry'. Hopefully it is working like it should and not taking the PC as a source.
That's great news! A bit of a personal situation is going to keep me from playing for a few days. But I'll get back this weekend.

So a quick update, system is working fine now. I'm playing around with Internet radio 'till I decide on either Qobuz or Tidal. Thanks everyone for your helpful advice and suggestions.
