phi112358,
You are on the right track. However, the sound quality can get much, much better. Incredibly so if you want to mod an ES9028Q2M dac board like we do over in the thread for that.

Do you think after modding, can it reach the real deal in terms of SQ ?

It's affordable !
Topping D10 can be had for 65usd in massdrop.
Topping D30 is 101 USD in Shenzhen audio.

What do you consider to be the real deal?

It should beat them easily. Probably the same for D50. Can't say by how much since I haven't heard them. I know they all use SMPS, and in their price range I never heard a SMPS that didn't damage sound quality.

Anyway, the modding is well designed and extensive. That also means it is a lot of work to do, however.

The D30 uses a good combination of quality components with a decent PCB layout.
May be you think the ess DACs are better than the AK44xx DACs ?

Do I need any special soldering irons or any other specialised equipment for this ?

Don't have any opinion relative to ESS or AKM. Implementation may matter more than chip maker.

I would strongly recommend a temperature controlled iron with a few different tip sizes. Weller or equivalent should be okay.
