I’m soldering up some new speaker cables. Anybody know what that little wing is for. A stop? A crimp/clamp?

Doesn’t make sense.

no, one is supposed to solder the cable onto the wing thing. Does make sense when considering the whole connector with case and not just the metal inlay you are currently looking at.
Those connectors are stackable.

That might be it. The entire contact tube is split. If you solder the wire inside the tube that could stop the tube from flexing and making contact.
