This works very good, but each pin, as you said, must touch the foil. Too bothersome if you have to clean a large batch.

Hey, thanks! It looks like an excellent tool! I'll buy one and give it a try.
The best way I have found of cleaning silver contacts is to use Silver dip (Silvo), providing, that is, that you have the item free to dip.
Dip it for about 20 to 30 seconds using a piece of strings to hold it in the liquid and then rinse in cold water and blow dry.
Its perfect for the pins inside XLRs that you can't get to and it doesn't remove the silver plating, just the tarnishing.
I just used it today on some chassis mounting BNC connectors - they came up a treat.
