Can I connect a DIR9001 to spdif of saa7220?

I would like to use the spdif output of a SAA7220 (pin 14), as the coaxial output of a CD-player (like the Philips CD160) as input for a DIR9001 (amplified via a 74HCT04 more or less as in the application note for the DIR9001).
I keep on getting a high error output of the DIR9001 for two different PCB designs.
Are the spdif formats of the two chips not compatible or am I doing something wrong?
Has anyone experience with this problem?
