Hypex UcD400HG faulty - no Blue LED

Hi Guys

Wonder if anybody can help.

Yes, looking forward to the Ncore, but in the meantime I have been landed with a problem...

A friend brought in a mono-block amplifier using UcD400HG module and the Blue LED no longer comes on. Seems that the pin on the 0.68uF cap after the output choke broke of (don't ask how) and the Hypex module did not like it and evidentially a puff of smoke from which I have difficult to see where it came from looking for something burnt. Clearly without that capacitor completing the 2nd Order output filter, the amplifier goes unstable, fatally so (?), which surprises me somewhat.

Has anybody got suggestions/explanations?

Cheers, Joe

Hi Joe,

I did have a cap once that blew on a UcD180HG. It failed quite catastrophically (I hadn't seen the insides of a cap before!). I guess it does happen from time to time. I have no idea why it failed: the amp had been working fine for a few months before.

In the end, I enquired with Hypex and they said if I send it back, they'll just replace it which I did and they did. I didn't fancy trying to fix myself, and I have to say their support team was excellent with a quick turnaround.

Test, Test, Test.

Hi Guys,
i made the effort
to compare again for most of the day,
although I've been doing this for two years.

Version1: Hypex NC400
Preamplifier Weiliang black 6010D Opa, World class clone,
with 10 x Signetics OPA 5534AN and 4 x OPA OPA2228PA Burr Brown
Power amplifiers Hypex Ncore 400
DAC Topping DS50, 32 bit 96000 Hz
Loudspeaker ASW Genius 510, impedance minimum 2.6 ohms

vs.

Version2: Hypex UcD400HG HxR
Preamplifier Weiliang black 6010D Opa, World class clone,
with 10 x Signetics OPA 5534AN and 4 x OPA OPA2228PA Burr Brown
Power amplifiers Hypex UcD400HG HxR | UcD
DAC Topping DS50, 32 bit 96000 Hz
Loudspeaker ASW Genius 510, impedance minimum 2.6 ohms

In my opinion, the Hypex UcD400HG HxR | sound UcD
rounder and more musical, the Hypex Ncore 400 more precise and precise,
this could be a bit too much in the long run.

With the system in this constellation, I've been hearing for about two years
the Hypex UcD400HG HxR | I just like UcD better.

Nevertheless, I also regularly listen to the NC400,
somehow they are addicting. 😁

Oh,i forgot, Amplifier switch from Start - good-old-hifi

Cinch switch from Dodocus Audio-Umschalter

Happy Easter and big eggs. 😉

HaJott

PS.

The power amps were my only DIY projects,
This will remain so.
Otherwise my focus is on collecting and listening to music.
I also collect old amplifiers and CD players from Harman/Kardon, Sony and Marantz, it's fun too.

Hi HaJott!

Did you do some correction to the ASW speakers? Seems it's not having very great linearity in the frequency domain in it's original state. Might be that the more revealing ncore amp shows the speaker's weakness? Of course this is just speculation, but perhaps not entirely unfounded.

Hi YSDR,

I looked for more technical data:

Technical specifications:

Crossover: 6/18 dB impedance - linearized
Bass: 2 x 220 mm wood fiber cone / neodymium magnet / 52 mm double-layer titanium voice coil
Midrange: 2 x 150 mm wood fiber membrane / neodymium magnet / 39 mm double-layer titanium voice coil
Tweeter: 25 mm high quality ceramic tweeter dome
Housing: varnished varnish, braced and reinforced inside
Dimensions: height: 1260mm / width: 290 mm / depth: 350 mm (height without spikes)
Nominal load capacity: 250 watts
Impulse load capacity: 300 watts
Frequency response: 28 - 30000 Hz.
Crossover frequencies 150/2000 Hz
Sensitivity 93.4 dB (2.83 V / m)
Connection range: 4 - 8 ohms
Impedance: 4 ohms
Weight: 35.5 kg
Accessories 1 set of Soundcare spikes (included), 1 set of spikes for carpeting (included)

The power amplifiers get along very well with the loudspeakers,
the bass is compact and not blurred,
I hear the only difference in the heights
the NC400 are very "accurate".
I'm actually very happy with both combinations, too
if there are small differences.
Jazz always works with the NC400.

I hope Google translated everything correctly. 🥴
