Out of interest while on the subject of wire links, are there differences in the THAT chips which means that the 1203 and 1206 need the zeners and the 1200 doesn't? I might be fiddling around with preamps in the future which could mean changes to the optimal gain in the power amp.

Yeah. The THAT1203 and THAT1206 have different gains. -3 dB and -6 dB, respectively. This means the inputs should be allowed to swing past the 17 V supply rails. Installing the zener diodes allows this to happen. If you never exceed 17 V peak on the input, you can leave the wire links in.

If my maths is right, 17V input gives of the order of 3.6kW output into 8 ohms. I don't think my system and listening habits would require that....

You're not considering potential large common-mode signals as well as other scenarios. Tom uses the THAT parts in a (home) audio power amp, but the THAT chips were designed with the pro audio market in mind and they have many more use cases to consider.
