Hi Guys,

Can anyone help identify this old (late 90s I think) subwoofer please?

I need to make a box for it but need the model number to get the right data sheet.

It’s a 12” driver with a single coil of 4 ohm impedance (measures around 3.5 ohms DC)

With thanks,

Just-measure-them-yourself :)
Lots of pages and YT videos explaining it, certainly some in this very Forum.

Just google/search "measuring TS parameters".

I bet there is some App to do it.

In my desperation I have been trying and have got as far as measuring the impedance and hence, I think, the Fs.

It’s 25.4Hz from what I can tell by fiddling with the signal generator and doing the maths.

OR 12W0-8 IF IT'S 8-OHM
It’s a 4 ohm unit for sure, I don’t think it’s a w0 as I have one of that vintage in a sealed box and this is different (beefier and with more excursion).
if you still have no luck. go to oldschoolstereo.com and someone will def. know!

That is for the tip, looks like my sort of scene too. :)

that's what I was saying. 12WO-D4

I saw that picture on google image but wrote it off as a mis identification as it didn’t look like W0 I have.

I looked at it more closely when you posted it and on the base sticker, towards the bottom of the photo, it says 12W4-D4.

According to the manual that is the dual 4ohm voice coil version which means mine is the 12W4-4, being the 4 ohm single voice coil version.

Thank you Mr ‘Crossed, I think you have cracked it!:)

Have you called JL Audio or gone on their website? They still have info on a lot of their discontinued models.

We The People managed to identify in the end, very satisfying. :)

As a post script to this I build a 1.35 cubic foot 1” thick, very well braced box for this. It looks a bit scrappy now as it’s still being filled, sanded and primed but it sounds incredible.

Very tight, very punchy and with so little artificial peaks that rap music sounds crap with it!*

Next is to paint or veneer it and run it past the Gruppenoberfuhrer and see if is acceptable for the domestic space.

It’s rated at 200 w rms, how much should I overspec the amp?

*A compliment and my test of a hi fi subwoofer.
