hey guys,

i'm a noob at car audio. i got an audiopiple AP-15001D and its sounds amazing but its draining my car battery when everything is turned off. the amp is drawing 200mA when nothing is turned on. this drains my car battery within a week. i didn't see the problem at first because i was using the car daily and that hid this problem. any idea on what i could do to fix this issue? is it worth looking into?

thanks for any help.

How hard is it to pull the fuse when the car won't be driven for an extended period?

What about inserting a continuous duty solenoid in the B+ line going to the amp to disconnect the amp when the key is switched off?

It may be possible to find the fault but a simple slip of a probe or a strand of wire dropping into the amp may cause catastrophic damage

I got a 250 watt computer power supply and did a current draw test when the amp is turned off and no remote line going to it. its drawing 18.7 mA. this is interesting because when I did the same test on the car with the car battery I was getting 200 mA - not sure if something is going on with the power cable to the amp. i'm going to do a test and see any current is drawn when nothing is connected to the power cable.

the remote line is coming from the head unit. i'll do a current test on the remote line when the car is turned off and see if there any current there.

Hey, Nice Pics of your Amp Guts! but your caps look a little beaten up.

After seeing this posing, I had to ask/post since I just recently purchased and AudioPipe APMI-2000 which is a 2000 watt car sub-woofer amplifier. Super powerful amp and a budget gem for sure. But, I'm curious as to what the normal current draw should be when a car amplifier is off.

Although I never had a dead battery, I worry about dead battery issues so I typically try and test current draw if i make any changes to my car audio setup.

My car pulls nominally 17mA when the car is off with the factory alarm system enabled.
I have an Old Alpine 5 channel amp that draws about 0.3ma while off and a newer Dual branded 4channel Amp that doesn't even register current draw on my ammeter. But the AudioPipe Amp is drawing 12mA even while off. I don't know but that seems a little high compared to my other amps. But Dosh Said his amp draws 18mA. Are these number in the range of Normal?

Thanks guys.

Is it wired correctly ?
Does the remote line go to the head units remote out line ?
Does the remote line drop to zero volts when the key is turned off ?

I mean everything works as it was meant to be. the remote line does go to the head unite. today I checked the current draw from the remote line when the car is off and I got zero amps, so that seems to be working as it was meant. everything turns on when the key is turned on. problem is the battery drain while everything is off. one or two days are fine but after a week I need a jump start.

could this be an audiopipe amp issue?? quality control??

It seems it could be these Audio pipe Amplifiers are putting the total parasitic drain on the car battery over the top. I've retested my Amps using the same power supply and meter setup for a side by side comparison.

The results are as follows....
Skar SK4500.1D Powered ON: 4.17A Powered Off: 0.2mA
Alpine MRD-F752 Powered ON: 4.57A Powered Off: 0.4mA
Dual DA704L Powered ON: 0.60A Powered Off: 0.0mA
AudioPipe APMI-2000 Powered ON: 1.13A Powered Off: 18.4mA

I've Attached Images of the metered results.

The parasitic current draw on the Audio pipe is magnitudes greater than all the other amps. Interestingly the amp is pretty efficient when running and puts out plenty of power.

I think a disconnect solenoid relay may be necessary for this Audio pipe amp for a non daily driver.
I already have a manual 150A/300A breakers in my system to disconnect my setup from the car's electrical as well as a way to isolate the second battery bank. I'll have to use those until i install solenoid for myself. I don't want to be stranded.

I hope some guys will post their Amp's parasitic draw results so I can compare. Its Hard to believe this could be in all Audio Pipe Amps.

Good luck.

Do you see 12v on pin 12 and 5v on pin 14 of the 494 driver IC?

Many MTX amps have B+ on the control ICs with no remote applied so they have a small amount of current draw when off. I think I measure one at about 6ma.

thanks Perry! that's a good suggestion.

a little update on my issue: I went and bought another Audiopipe APCLE-15001D and it had the same issue. Drawing 18.7 mA when its turned off, so I decided to go with a relay-cutoff and call it a day.
