Default Distortion Detector - how it work

in this video you will see a device that show distortion above 1% ( red led )

can anyone explain in theory how it is possible to measure the distortion of the signal with only two cables.
I mean by not comparing the output signal with the power supply .

Maybe if you just measure the dc component it should work.

It may be looking for a pure sine wave from the test tone CD with no harmonics. Any harmonics would be considered distortion.
