Head unit line level output impedance

Any suggestion for getting some volume out of a head unit that has a 3V/55ohm output? Trying to get it to match with the input of anything is getting to be not fun. I'm at the point where I am considering building a preamp from scratch on stripboard.

Could you rephrase your problem?
Your amp(s) do have input sensitivity adjustment?

Yes, gain adjustment is available on everything in the chain (active system). The last two heads I have used had outputs of 2.7v/330ohm (Eclipse 5441) and 2v/10kOhm (Alpine CDA7838) and they didn't have a volume issue. The head I am referencing and asking about here is a Eclipse CD1200. All I can think of as to the lower volume (even with the gain increased) is a impedance mismatch. 55ohm IS a pretty low output impedance.

As your old head units had lower output voltage and you said they were fine, I can only suggest that all you need to do is lower the input control dial position on your amp to achieve finer control with the headunit.

Even with the gain as high as it will go, it still isn't like the other heads. I'm thinking of using a Audio Control 2XS instead of the xover built into the HiFonics Cyclops monoblock. Below are signal flow charts from before and what I am considering.

OK...got it sorted. I had forgotten that THIS particular amp has a button for TWO input ranges. Press the button and VOILA!
