Turntable upgrade...

I had an old AR turntable that I sold to a DJ years ago and replaced it with a semi auto Hitachi. The AR cost about $150 and the Hitachi cost about $175. At the time I thought I was buying an upgrade but the AR always sounded clearly better. Wish I never sold the AR. I changed cartridges on the Hitachi a few times and each resulted in an improvement. My question is:

Thru DIY, can I upgrade the sound of the Hitachi turntable?

Bass weight was most noticeably missing as was an overall fullness and warmth of sound. Please let me know if this can be done or is the turntable always going to sound this way and not worth upgrading at all?

Many thanks,
Godzilla

Hi,

You can improve the Hitachi somewhat with tweaks and mass loading
but for any major rebuilding IMO the effort is not usually worth it.

Through DIY you can either get a decent deck and mod it, or buy
something for the fundamental bits and build your own turntable.

You can also build a very good unipivot arm, or source a good one.
