Bigbottle Phonostage Builders thread.

I meant brands of coupling caps and RIAA components , you must have tried few to come with some conclusions
Oh, sorry,

Yes, I've tried loads.

I like Clarity caps and Obligatto Golds for the output caps

I was not a fan of Audio Notes or Mundorfs.

I also liked LeClenche. But they arent made in the same place anymore so I cant say if they are any good.

Resistors, I have used a few...Yageo, Vishay, Multicomp etc...

I like to make sure the values are exactly matched per channel, other than that, I felt no need to go mad with resistors.

Have you tried Miflex? People seems to like them :D

My favourite resistors are Vishay 0.1% low temp coefficient , usually I additionally match them . Only time I have used z-foils was after being “accused “ of not having all necessary tweaks when comparing Paradise and Vida , which I found laughable as Paradise RIAA is +0.8/+0.6 @20-20kHz .
Not much preference as to caps and I found cheap Wima to be as good as expensive boutique ones but I’ll try Claritycaps.

I felt I could "hear" the WIMA caps.

Like they were having a 'fluffy' effect. I cant describe it better but when they came out, so did the fluff.

However, I accept that it was most likely to be something completely unrelated or that was fixed inadvertently.

Still, I dont use them now anyway.

Clarity caps arent crazy money and sound great. Why not!

Aren’t these rated at 1/4W only

So they are my mistake.

I fired up my board today; no magic smoke and nothing appearing to get to warm. I know Alan posted re the voltages but as I am using 6DJ8 and 6N2P valves is there any difference in the readings?
I have the following measurements all relative to ground;

V1:pin1 90.6v; pin2 0v; pin3 3.17v; pin6 90.3v; pin7 0.8v; pin8 2.2v; between pins 4-5 6.27v.

V2:pin1 73.4v; pin2 0.9v; pin3 1.297v; pin6 79.6v; pin7 0.8v; pin8 1.156v; between 4-5 6.3v.

V3:pin1 215.8v; pin2 72.2v; pin3 78.3v; pin6 216v; pin7 86.9v; pin8 85.8v; between 4-5 6.34v.

Sorry for all the questions not used to valves.

No problem, V1 is good.
V3 pins 3 and 8 'follow on' from V2 pins 1 and 6 so will always be of a similar value. However you seem to have a hot 6N2P that is taking quite a lot of current compared with an ECC83.
I suggest changing the 1.2k resistors for 2.2k and see how you get on.

Before attempting to swap the 1k2 resistor I thought I would try a different 6n2p valve and now have the following readings:-

pins 1 & 6 pins 3 & 8

V1 88 87.4 2.1 2.1

V2 118 118 0.8 0.8

V3 211 212 123.5 123.5

These appear to be within the 10% as mentioned by Bas am I good to go?
Also the outputs are fluctuating by several milli volts am I right in assuming that these will drop when the output is loaded by having a linestage connected?
tia.
