What you need is what magnum dynalab used to make, tunable signal amplifier, basically one more gang before your front end...signal sleuth.

You may have to turn the trim caps and coils with a plastic screwdriver. tune to a weak station and turn the trims on the tuning var cap first listening for lowest noise. Tune only one at a time so that the response is optimal. A station at 88mhz and 107+ makes this task easier.
